Understanding Violent Crime Charges

If you're facing charges for violent crimes, don't navigate the legal system alone. The experienced legal team at The Ford Law Firm can represent you through the process. With more than 25 years of experience, our attorneys know how to navigate the legal system. We'll work hard to represent you no matter the violent crime charges you're facing.

To better understand the charges you may be faced with, we recommend reviewing the list of common violent crime charges below.

What is Stalking?

A person commits the offense of stalking when he or she follows, or places under surveillance, or contacts without consent, another person for the purpose of harassing and intimidating the other person. This type of contact can occur through any communication.

Though the offense of stalking is only a misdemeanor, often when one is arrested and bonds out on a stalking warrant in a domestic situation, one of the conditions of the citizen’s bond will be to have no contact whatsoever with the other party. Often, by consent or otherwise, the accused and other party will resume relations which places the accused citizen at risk for having their bond revoked and returning to jail.

Murder

This crime results in serious penalties including extended jail time and the death penalty in the State of Georgia.

Murder and homicide cases in Georgia are vigorously prosecuted. There are several different murder charges in Georgia, including voluntary or involuntary manslaughter, homicide by vehicle, first, second- and third-degree murder, and felony murder, which occurs when a murder occurs during the commission of another felony, such as armed robbery. The circumstances of the individual case will determine which charges are filed against a defendant.

Kidnapping

The crime of kidnapping can refer to abduction by a stranger or a family member taking a child in violation of a custody order imposed by a judge. In most cases, family kidnappings involve a non-custodial parent taking the child during or after losing an acrimonious custody dispute in family court, including international kidnappings.

Kidnapping is a serious crime that is considered a felony under Georgia law and federal statute.

If convicted, the punishment can result in 10 to 20 years of imprisonment or the death penalty, if the person was harmed or taken for ransom.
